INSTALLATION
Filters -Bowman PE (Using Sand or Zelbrite Filter Media)

INTRODUCTION: -
The BOWMAN High Rate Sand/Zelbrite Filter incorporates the latest technology together with components proven in the swimming pool industry. It has been designed for use with either fresh or salt water and for best performance it should be installed with the recommended Poolstore Pump and Motor.

Its' installation should be undertaken by a person who is knowledgeable of swimming pool filtration requirements. In the event of advice on installation being required, then please contact the source from which the unit was purchased or the manufacturer.

LOCATION: -
The filtration unit should be placed in its permanent location, preferably as close to the pool as practicable. It should be located on a level concrete base or concrete slab having minimum dimensions of 1 metre x 750mm.

The minimum clear vertical height above the concrete slab should be 1.2 metres and 105mm is required behind the slab to allow easy removal of the pump and motor and to provide cooling ventilation for the electric motor.

WEATHER PROTECTION: -
The BOWMAN filtration unit including the pump and motor are made of weather resistant and UV Stabilised materials and as such no further weatherproofing is necessary, although they may be covered if desired. Please allow adequate ventilation if covering the installation.

GETTING READY: -

1.
Remove filtration tank and all components inside tank from filter carton.

2.
Remove valve from separate carton.

3.
Remove pump and motor from other carton if purchased as a complete system.

4.
Check quantity and grade of sand or quantity of "Zelbrite" media (if this type of media is being used).

ASSEMBLY: -
1a Normal Assembly: -
Place filtration tank on a concrete slab, with the label facing you. It should be positioned so that the pump and motor are on the left hand side when you face the unit.

1b Alternative Asse
mbly: -

Position tank with the label facing away from you and the pump and motor will then be on the right hand side when you face the unit. If unit is palced in this position then the pressure gauge will be difficult to read and the 6 way valve handle more difficult to operate.

2.
Check that the riser pipe assembly is firmly located in the tank base and that the
laterals are in position and in the tank leg cavities.

3.
Place the plastic sand shute over the top of the standpipe to stop media entering this
pipe when filling the tank and to stop media from entering tanks valve bolt holes.

4.
Fill the tank to approximately 40mm above the laterals with water.

5.
Pour the specified quantity of fine sand or Zelbrite into the tank, distributing it evenly.
Media level should be approximately 300mm from the very top of the tank when full.

6.
Remove the plastic media chute and clean the tank top of any media particles.

7.
Fill the filter tank with water.

8.
Check that the small 'O' Ring is in the groove inside bottom of the valve, and
lubricate with silicone grease or rubber grease.

9.
Lubricate the large 'O' Ring and place it in the groove in the underside of valve.

10.
Take the valve and position handle so that the pointer is located in the "Filter" slot.

11.
Fit the valve onto the tank with the bolts provided and tighten after all the bolts have
been placed in position.

12.
Place the pump and motor in position approx. 200mm away from the filter tank with
pump inlet facing you for normal assembly.

13.
Screw union into top of pump and plumb between this point and the union marked
"Pump" on the valve.

14. Screw union into front of pump and plumb to suction line of pool.

15. Connect return pipework to union on valve marked "Return".

16. Connect backwash line to union on valve marked "Waste".

17. Remove clear Hair and Lint Pot lid off the pump and fill bowl with water. Reseal lid
after lubrication of 'O' Ring.

18. Place valve handle on "Waste" position.

19. Remove plastic plug from valve body and screw in pressure gauge.
       Do not overtighten.

FILTER START-UP: -
Prior to the initial start-up, the pool should be over filled to compensate for the initial loss of water:

1.
With the valve in the "Waste" position, turn on pump. Water will be drawn from the pool and discharged with some air via the backwash line. This will assist in the initial priming of the pump.

2.
Turn off the pump and rotate valve to "Backwash" position.

3.
Turn on pump and run until the discharge water becomes clear (as seen in the sight glass on the valve).
NOTE: During this initial cycle some excess media may be discharged by the filter.
DO NOT BE ALARMED as the media bed in the filtration tank will adopt its maximum volume for the particular installation.

4.
When the sight glass becomes clear, turn off the pump and wait for at least 30 seconds before you then …….

5.
Turn valve to "Rinse" position and then turn on pump. Water should become clear in sight glass in a short period of time when you turn off pump, and then …….

6.
Turn valve to "Filter" position and note pressure as shown on the pressure gauge.
NOTE: some air may still be discharged into the pool for a short time.

7.
Your BOWMAN filtration system is now providing you with clean filtered water ready
for swimming

8.
Having noted the start up pressure (usually about 70kPa) then it should be remembered
that the unit will require backwashing when the pressure rises by an additional 40-50kPa.

BACKWASHING FILTER: -

Backwash when the pressure gauge reading reaches 120kPa or as indicated in 8 above.
To Backwash: -
1. Turn off the pump.
2. Turn the handle to the "Backwash" position.
3. Turn on pump and run until water viewed in the sight glass becomes clear, usually 2 or 3 minutes.
4. Turn off the pump and wait a minimum of 30 seconds, then …..
5. Turn the handle to "Rinse".
6. Turn on the pump and run for approximately one minute.
7. Turn off the pump.
8. Turn the handle to "Filter" position.
9. Turn on the pump and a new filter cycle has begun.
NB (a) Never vacuum while backwashing
(b) Never shift the valve handle while the pump is running.
